Conjugate Acids and Bases
Earlier we learned about a theory created by two men named Bronsted and Lowry. Do you know what the theory states? (if not click here). The Bronsted-Lowry theory states that all acids are H+ donors and all bases are H+ receptors. These acids and bases are very generous, but what happens when an acid donates an H+ ion to a base? Well that base then becomes the conjugate acid. Yes you read that correctly, no you are not dreaming. The base becomes the conjugate acid because the acid no longer has the amount of H+ ions to be an acid, so it becomes a base. The base then has the correct amount of H+ ions to be an acid, so it is the conjugate acid. Here is an example of what a conjugate acid and conjugate base look like.
