Ph and Poh Scales
The pH scale is how we tell the strength of an acid or a base. The pH scale is a scale that is our of 14. An strong acid is 1-3 and a weak acid is 4-6. A weak base is 8-11 and a strong base is 12-14. A neutral substance will have a 7 on the pH scale. The pOH scale is the exact opposite of the pH scale so a strong base would be 1-3 and a weak base would be 4-6. A weak acid on the pOH scale is 8-11 and a strong acid is 12-14.
Formulas
Often times you will be asked to solve a problem when you are given one of the following (H+, OH-, PH, or POH). You will then be asked to find the remaining three. To find these remaining three you should plug in your given value into the formula that fits and use your answer to find the next value. You should do this until you have all 4. The formulas are...
pH=-log[H+}
[H+]= 2nd log(-pH)H
pOH + pH=14
pOH= -log(OH-)
pH=-log[H+}
[H+]= 2nd log(-pH)H
pOH + pH=14
pOH= -log(OH-)
